Khorasan Carpets

Khorasan is not a pattern but a place — the historical region whose cities gave the carpet some of its most enduring forms. Khorasan Weaving House works within that inheritance, on looms in Herat, in hand-spun wool and natural dye.

A region, not a label

Greater Khorasan stretched across what is now north-eastern Iran, western Afghanistan and parts of Central Asia. Its cities were centres of learning and of craft, and carpet weaving developed there as a settled, workshop art rather than a purely nomadic one.

Herat, where our weavers work, was among the most important of those cities. The name of the house is a statement of lineage: the work belongs to that regional tradition.

The four families we weave

Each family answers a different room and a different temperament.

  • Heritage — the classical repertoire: medallions, palmettes and full borders, drawn faithfully.
  • Modern Heritage — the same architecture, simplified, with quieter colour.
  • Contemporary — reduced to field, tone and a single gesture of line.
  • Pictorial — the carpet as image, woven at the highest knot densities we work.

Eras and age

We present work by era as well as design: contemporary and modern pieces from our own looms, antique carpets of roughly fifty to a hundred years, ancient examples beyond a century, and timeless masterpieces that sit outside any single date.

Origin and assurance

Each carpet leaves the house with its own certificate of origin recording where it was woven, the materials used and the hands that made it. It is a record, not a marketing document.

Questions

What is a Khorasan carpet?
Khorasan is the historical region of north-eastern Iran and western Afghanistan whose cities — Herat among them — have woven carpets for centuries. A Khorasan carpet is a hand-knotted wool carpet from that tradition: restrained drawing, natural dyes and dense knotting.
Is Herat part of Khorasan?
Historically yes. Herat was one of the great cities of Khorasan, and our looms stand there today, which is why the house takes the name Khorasan Weaving House.
What designs does the tradition use?
We weave four families: Heritage, drawn from the classical repertoire; Modern Heritage, where old structure is simplified; Contemporary, pared back to field and line; and Pictorial, where the carpet becomes an image.
Can a Khorasan carpet be made to my dimensions?
Yes. Alongside our standard formats of roughly 4, 9 and 12 square metres, any size, palette or design can be commissioned; the loom is dressed for your carpet specifically.
